The bloodbath of murders that have been behind the minds of both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth forces them to become overpowered with guilt and fear and that eventually leads to them both going insane. Macbeth is the appointed King, but with the witches’ prophecy in mind, he arranged for the murder of Banquo and his son, Fleance. Malcolm, the son of the King, who was destined to be next in line, flees to England. The next morning, MacDuff, a nobleman, discovers the body of the King. However Lady Macbeth convinces him the deed must be done. Before Macbeth commits the crime he begins to have illusions of his imagination plainly because he feels incredibly guilty. He doesn’t know if what the witches say is going to happen through fate or he has to take matters into his own hands to gain the much wanted power.įilled with ambitious thoughts and supported by his wife, Lady Macbeth, they plan to murder King Duncan to seize the throne themselves.

Macbeth faces a strong inner conflict of fate versus free will. However King Duncan declares that he is passing the thrown down to his son, Malcolm, confusing Macbeth as he believed that he would become the next King. The witches vanish, and a messenger from the King arrives announcing that Macbeth has been named Thane of Cawdor, which means that the first part of the witches’ prophecy came true. The witches also predict that future leaders will not be descendants of Macbeth but will be descendants of Banquo, another brave Scottish soldier. Macbeth tells the story of a brave Scottish soldier who receives a prophecy from three evil witches that he will become both ‘Thane of Cawdor’ and the ‘King of Scotland’. Macbeth is known as one of Shakespeare’s darkest plays and the main characters are portrayed to be wicked and evil.
